EditorÕs Introductory Note:
Our progressive post-holiday potluck in late January was a great success. Many thanks to the potluck hosts, flyer distribution team, and organizers! As we move forward into 2019, please support our ongoing neighborhood container by contributing to the fundraising appeal if you havenÕt done so already (see item 1). WeÕd also welcome your help this Saturday at the first work party of the year (see item 2).

1. ItÕs
Not Too Late! Support HNAÕs Annual Fundraising Appeal
EditorÕs note: Many thanks to those whoÕve already contributed to HNAÕs
Annual Fundraising Appeal! WeÕre still several hundred dollars short of meeting
our basic budget for 2019. Bottom line, only a small percentage of all the
neighbors who benefit from our initiatives have contributed. If more neighbors
could take the time to contribute right now (the online link makes it easy), we
would really appreciate it!
HNA doesnÕt have a formal
membership structure or require annual dues because we wanted to keep
participation as broad as possible. At the same time, we incur various expenses
during the course of a year, including:
*
Flyer production
*
Supplies for disaster preparedness drills and other special events in park
*
Supplies for volunteer work parties
*
In-fill and replacement plants for Halcyon Commons and nearby landscaped
features
*
Graffiti removal peripherals
*
Small projects in Halcyon Commons (including refurbishing the mural on the
backside of our bulletin board, new boulders for the park and nearby landscaped
features, plus adding some paver stones at common crossways into the park
— projects for which we have slowly been building up the funds).
WeÕre asking neighbors who
appreciate all that HNA does to improve and beautify our neighborhood, to keep
us safer (on both crime-watch and disaster-prep levels), and to facilitate
communication and help create a more convivial place to live to give
generously, and do your part.
(1) Make a financial contribution
directly to HNA (not tax-deductible,
but allows us maximum flexibility) by writing a check made out to ÒHNAÓ and mailing or dropping it off in an
envelope to HNA Treasurer Susan Hunter, 3044 Halcyon Court, Berkeley,
CA 94705.
(2) Give to HNA online! Go to https://www.paypal.com/cgi-bin/webscr?cmd=_s-xclick&hosted_button_id=QSESRB6FZAX3C to make your contribution.
(Again, contributions to HNA arenÕt tax-deductible but allow us maximum
flexibility.) PayPal keeps a fee of approximately 3 percent.
(3) Make a tax-deductible
financial contribution by writing a check made out to ÒBerkeley Partners for ParksÓ (BPFP, our nonprofit fiscal sponsor,
which charges a 7 percent overhead fee), earmarked
Halcyon, and mailing or dropping it off in an envelope to HNA
Treasurer Susan Hunter, 3044 Halcyon Court, Berkeley, CA 94705.
No contribution is too small (or
too large!). If youÕd like to receive a copy of our year-end financial report, you
can request it by writing halcyon92@gmail.com. Our neighborhood associationÕs health and vitality depend
on your ongoing support! Please pitch in! THANK YOU!!!

2. Work
Party in Halcyon Commons & Surrounding Neighborhood, Sat. 3/10, 9:30 a.m. –
2 p.m.
Location: Halcyon Commons (Halcyon at Prince) RAIN OR SHINE!
Time Frame: Come anytime between 9:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m.
Sat. 3/9 (even twenty minutes helps!)
Goals: Weed and mulch in the park and nearby planted areas; remove graffiti
(if the weather cooperates) & pick up trash in the larger neighborhood;
enjoy the company of neighbors and student volunteers from the Berkeley Project
Fuel: Refreshments, coffee for early arrivals & lunch courtesy of Whole
Foods Market
Once again weÕll
enjoy the help of volunteers from the Berkeley Project as students from UC help
us weed in the park and spread mulch. Note given the possibility of rain:
WeedingÕs easier when the groundÕs wet! If you can help, just show up at
Halcyon Commons. Bring your own weeding tools, or weÕll loan you some. Supervised
children welcome!

3. Halcyon Thrive 2019 Update
EditorÕs note: Halcyon Thrive is continuing in 2019! The
first social of the year will be a SoupÕs On simple meal taking place on
Sunday, March 24, so if youÕd like to receive an invitation to that event,
please sign up soon! HereÕs the content from the latest flyer.
Consider joining
Halcyon Thrive!
A project of Halcyon
Neighborhood Association for Halcyon neighbors willing to take the next step in
mutual support . . .
The goal of Halcyon
Thrive is to explore ways to offer some of the beneficial services and
resources of a multi-generational Ashby Village-type program on an opt-in,
voluntary basis without monetary exchange.
At Planning Circles
for Halcyon Thrive, neighbors have brainstormed possibilities for shared
activities and ways of offering support to one another. These include:
* A Halcyon Thrive
Caring Circle providing opportunities for participating neighbors to ask for
and offer support to one another by listing needs and singing up to meet them
so we can better Òthrive-in-place.Ó
* A Conversations
program at neighborsÕ homes sharing areas of interest and knowledge while
getting to know one another better. Several Conversations are in the works for
the coming year, and new ideas are welcome.
* Social Gatherings
to build community, including possible SoupÕs On simple meals, deck parties,
field trips, and potlucks.
If you live in the
Halcyon neighborhood (Telegraph to Adeline, Ashby to Woolsey, in South
Berkeley) and want to be part of the Halcyon Thrive project, please email your
name, address, phone, and email to HalcyonThrive@gmail.com.

4. Whole
Foods Market News: Next Drop-in Meeting Fri., 4/5/19, 8:15-9:00 a.m.
EditorÕs note: News from Whole Foods Market, courtesy of Store Team Leader Hayden Richards follows. Whole Foods Market generously provides supportive food and beverage donations to our work parties, National Night Out Ice Cream Social, and key HNA CERT events during the year. We greatly appreciate the partnership in taking good care of the neighborhood we share!
Next
Drop-in Progress Meeting, Friday, April 5, 2019, 8:15-9:00 a.m.
Whole Foods Market (check in at Customer Service)
These meetings are held at the Community Table at the front of the store or outside, and the purpose is to share our plans for ongoing changes in the store, street litter control, and progress on any of the ongoing issues we discuss with HNA reps and nearby neighbors. The Store Team Leader is usually present, and anyone is welcome to join us. Of course there will be complimentary coffee or tea. Our goal is to follow up immediately on any issues that we hear about, and to hear how the store can be a better neighbor. As always, if there are ever any urgent issues, please call the store at 510-649-1333 and ask for the shift manager on duty. We have new shift leaders being trained, so please send an email to the emails below so we can follow up appropriately. Always feel free to swing by too, if youÕd like to have a word with us.
